Established in 2000, the Reproductive Medicine Center of Peking University Shenzhen Hospital was among the first in Guangdong Province and the very first in Shenzhen to introduce in vitro fertilization (IVF) technology, as well as the first in Shenzhen to offer preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). In 2017, the center was awarded the Shenzhen Municipal Healthcare "Three Famous Projects" initiative, partnering with the research team led by Academician Qiao Jie from Peking University Third Hospital, dedicated to female reproductive health and fertility preservation; this collaboration was renewed for a second phase in 2023. In 2018, the center spearheaded the establishment of the Shenzhen Reproductive Medicine Specialty Alliance. Over the past two decades, the center has been repeatedly recognized as a Guangdong Provincial Specialty Unit, a Shenzhen Signature Discipline, and a Shenzhen Key Medical Specialty.
The center comprises outpatient clinics in reproductive gynecology and andrology, operating rooms, and a day ward. Its laboratory facilities include an artificial insemination (AIH) laboratory, an embryology (IVF) laboratory, a preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) laboratory, an andrology laboratory, and a research laboratory. The center currently employs 55 professional staff members, comprising 20 clinical physicians, 15 laboratory technicians, 15 nursing staff, and 5 research scientists; among them, 17 hold doctoral degrees and 16 hold master's degrees.
Over the past three years, the center has recorded an average annual outpatient volume exceeding 150,000 visits and performed more than 7,000 IVF treatment cycles per year. The laboratory is equipped with advanced instruments valued at nearly RMB 20 million, including: Astec-ICSI dual-user workstations, mobile IVF workstations, inverted microscopes with micromanipulation systems, time-lapse embryo monitoring and analysis systems, genetic workstations, spindle observation devices, cell electrofusion instruments, embryo incubators, storage liquid nitrogen tanks, and live-cell workstations.
Clinical Technologies and Services: Intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilization–embryo transfer (IVF-ET), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), frozen–thawed embryo transfer (FET), preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), in vitro maturation of immature oocytes (IVM), assisted hatching (AH), vitrification of oocytes and embryos, and cryopreservation of sperm and ovarian tissue. Andrological Surgical Procedures: Testicular biopsy, microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE), vasovasostomy, vasoepididymostomy, seminal vesicle exploration, and microsurgical varicocelectomy.
1. Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD): Capable of identifying balanced translocation carrier status in embryos, thereby preventing the transmission of chromosomal balanced translocations to offspring. It also blocks the inheritance of thousands of genetic disorders—including familial Mediterranean fever, hereditary deafness, polycystic kidney disease, and spinal muscular atrophy (SMA)—to subsequent generations.
2. Fertility Preservation Techniques: Cryopreservation of ovarian tissue, oocytes, and embryos effectively addresses fertility concerns in cancer patients following chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
3. Endometrial Receptivity and Uterine Microbiome Testing during the Implantation Window: Provides precise and effective diagnostic and therapeutic options for challenging infertility cases such as recurrent implantation failure (RIF) and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL).
Integrating clinical service, education, and research, the Reproductive Medicine Center serves as a postdoctoral training site for Peking University, as well as a doctoral and master's degree program in reproductive endocrinology. It is also a master's training base for Shantou University Medical College and Anhui Medical University, having cultivated and delivered numerous professionals to the field of reproductive medicine. The center has successively undertaken more than ten research projects, including grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, Doctoral Fund of the Ministry of Education, Guangdong Medical Research Fund, and Shenzhen Municipal Key Science and Technology Projects. It has excelled in all aspects of clinical services, new technology implementation, quality indicators, talent development, and scientific research.
With strong support from the hospital, the Reproductive Medicine Center is building a comprehensive platform for infertility diagnosis and reproductive genetics. Upholding the philosophy of "patient-centered care, providing safe, high-quality, efficient, and satisfactory medical and nursing services," the center is committed to fostering collaborative innovation, accelerating the overall improvement of reproductive medicine specialty services in Shenzhen, breaking down disciplinary and institutional barriers, and conducting high-quality clinical care and research on reproductive health-related disorders. Our goals are to reduce infertility and birth defect rates in Shenzhen and surrounding areas, improve pregnancy outcomes for patients with complex infertility, and continue to strengthen our discipline's leading role in the Greater Bay Area.
